Interstate Preliminary finals: My thoughts
Its Monday, so here’s my opinion piece!
Finals and the who gets a home final. I am sick of the mejar (as the boys (Disco and the Exposition) at footytalk.com.au would say) saying that when there is two interstate teams that finish 1 & 2 and win the first week of the finals that the 2nd place team deserves a home final! They don’t. They also say they have earned the home final! They haven’t!
It has been clear for the last 4 odd years (or how ever long the current contract with the MCG has run) that there has to be one Preliminary final at the MCG. Therefore the only way to truly “earn” a home final is to come first and win in the first week of the finals (or be a Melbourne based team, finish 1,2,3 or 4 and win the first week of the finals). Surely they all know this and so can’t claim they “deserve” a home final! If there not happy, don’t show up in protest!
But really the AFL (and we all know the Explosion is in their pocket so he will probably defend them on this issue) are as much to blame as the interstate clubs and the mejar in this for not writing the rules of the game as such! Surely the rules of the game should say something like:
“Earning a home Prelim: The highest finishing side that wins the first week of the finals automatically wins a home Prelim. If the highest ranked side is a Victorian based team, the next highest rank side will also get a home prelim.”
There’s always complaints that finishing first earns no rewards, but surely this system is the ultimate reward for finishing first!
Surely something like this ends the debate and fixes up the fiasco that is run by the interstate sides and the mejar that is allowed to go on by the AFL because they don’t have the balls to put this right.
